Interior Design Trends for 2020

Each year, we see beautiful new ideas, design trends, colour schemes and concepts come into play in Australian homes and we expect that 2020 will be no different. As 2019 comes to a close, we are seeing the evolution and growth of some interior design trends which are on-style, yet timeless. Below are some of our favourites:

STRUCTURED SIMPLICITY

Structured simplicity has elements of minimalism but rather than just focusing on the amount of furniture or the number of objects in your home, it’s also about creating a simplistic colour scheme within your home. This stripped-back look is all about warm but neutral colours like beige, honey, cream, rust and clay. In 2019 we saw the ‘Nordic Retreat’ trend growing increasingly popular and ‘Structured Simplicity’ borrows a lot of elements from this look. Avoid any bold or bright colours as the aim of this trend is to create a safe and calming environment. Add some comfy blankets, soft rugs or cushions to complete the look.

WHERE SHOULD I USE THIS TREND?

Structured simplicity can be applied pretty much anywhere in your home but given its emphasis on comfort and relaxation, it’s particularly beautiful in a lounge room or bedroom.

NATURAL LIGHTING

There is a major emphasis on natural light in homes today, and rightly so considering the many advantages. Bringing sunlight into a room completely transforms it, creating a warm atmosphere. Today, we are more health-conscious than ever and countless studies have shown that exposure to sunlight reduces your risk of depression with architect Thomas Schielke stating that “Daylight triggers our circadian rhythms and contributes thereby to our health and well-being”. Sunlight improves our mood, bone strength and sleeping patterns and given that we spend so much time in our homes, it’s vital that we allow as much sunlight into our home as possible using large, strategically placed windows and glass doors. This is also majorly beneficial in terms of energy efficiency meaning that you’re benefitting the environment and your electricity bill will be reduced- it really is a win-win solution!

WHERE SHOULD I USE THIS TREND?

Everywhere! We recommend having as much natural light as possible in every room of your home.

WALL PANELLING

Wooden panelling is an excellent way to create a rustic yet modern look in a room. Rather than just have paint or drywall, you can create an elegant feature wall. Interior designer Kate Lawrence says, “Whilst already present in 2019, wall panelling is a trend that will remain strong right through 2020 and beyond. It is an affordable design solution that gives a space ‘wow-factor’ but doesn’t require a large budget to be able to introduce it to your home.”

WHERE SHOULD I USE THIS TREND?

Again, this an addition that can be made to any room where you wish to make a bit more of a statement. However, we think it looks particularly good behind a couch or a bed.

GO HANDMADE

As we move into 2020 there’s going to be even more of an emphasis on unique and handcrafted decor. When everything in your home is mass-produced it’s difficult to create an authentic look. Keep an eye out for unusual ceramics and funky pieces of art. Head to a market or an independent boutique and look for bits and pieces that would complement your interior. Often unique or handmade pieces can be pretty expensive so we aren’t saying that you need to decorate your entire home with one-of-a-kind pieces, but it’s nice to have a few unexpected pieces to create a space that feels individual.

WHERE SHOULD I USE THIS TREND?

Again, this is something that can be incorporated pretty much anywhere in your home. Perhaps focus first on finding pieces for your kitchen and living room as these tend to be the areas where you may have guests or friends.
